Atlantic Center for the Arts The idea of a quiet place where artists could go to focus on their art and work with internationally renowned "masters" in a tranquil, natural environment blossomed in 1977 in the mind of Doris Leeper, a painter, sculptor and active environmentalist. A forthright, determined, passionate woman, Leeper soon persuaded friends and community members to join in her vision. In 1979, she convinced The Rockefeller Foundation to provide a challenge grant that soon was matched. This $25,000 in seed money unofficially birthed Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

The Pouche Cove Foundation Since 1990, the Pouch Cove Foundation has provided live/work space to visiting artists from around the world. Our program provides artists with a calendar month's residency either on the edge of the North Atlantic in Pouch Cove or overlooking the Bay of Islands in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada. The residency includes exclusive use of one of the four furnished studio/residences each of which is about 1000 square feet. The over 240 residencies the Foundation has hosted to date (2001) have inspired and informed the wide range of visual artists who have had the opportunity to participate. While the Foundation's principle area of interest has been painting (in all its forms) we have hosted curators, installation artists, printmakers, and sculptors. The Foundation is particularly interested in hosting groups of artists working toward specific exhibition opportunities. Part of the pleasure of our program is the casual nature of the place, not only do we provide unique settings for residences, but we provide a break from everyday routine and obligations thereby permitting greater creativity. What was started by the Baird family by accident has become an important part of Newfoundland's culture. In fact numerous former residents have acquired homes in the province and become part and full time Newfoundlanders! The residency building is located in the centre of the town and is a fully equipped artists retreat. It boasts a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean, which is literally at your doorstep. The weather is very unpredictable and while we think of it as a moderate maritime climate, visitors are surprised of the coolness. In the spring there are icebergs right outside the window, and during the summer, whales are visible from the studios. The fall has the most consistently good weather, and in the winter, the heavy seas are a site to behold, occasionally leaving salt spray on the windows. The residency itself is a converted restaurant building. Across the street is a convenience store which can provide the basic food requirements. The town hall, fire station, and library are also close by.
Each studio is 1,200 square feet, each with it's own separate entrance.
